Journalists, editors, and community leaders will come together to consider lessons learned — both where the media got things right and where they fell short — when covering the 2020 election. We will review takeaways from this election season and consider how to apply those lessons in 2021 for covering the new administration, the coronavirus, and vaccines.

The event is a joint initiative among American Press Institute, Election SOS, First Draft, Hearken, PEN America, Protect Democracy and Trusting News. Representatives from each organization will lead a breakout room discussion.

This event will be an active session with breakout rooms that cover these topics:
    • American Press Institute: Explaining democracy: Making government and civic processes accessible in reporting
    • First Draft: Anticipating repeat mis- and disinformation narratives for 2021
    • Hearken: Engagement journalism for elections and beyond
    • PEN America: Bringing journalists & communities together to fight distrust & misinformation
    • Protect Democracy: Covering Democracy beyond the partisan lens
    • Trusting News: Re-engaging the right: Journalism that is relevant for and trusted by conservative audiences
