About the Press Freedom & Local News Collaborative

The NENPA Press Freedom and Local News Collaborative launches with the “Know Your News: Understanding Press Freedom and the Value of Local News” campaign on Constitution Day, September 17, 2025. The Collaborative will continue year-round, giving New England newsrooms ready-to-publish content that shows why press freedom matters and how local journalism serves communities.

What you get

  • Weekly stories, plus graphics and social posts, delivered through PluckyWire.

  • Editorially safe content: explanatory and educational, not investigative or sensitive.

  • Amplification: we also share member editorials, columns, and letters that support press freedom and the value of local news.

How it works

  1. NENPA curates & uploads all materials to the PluckyWire platform.

  2. Your newsroom publishes what fits your editorial outlook — use as much or as little as you like.

  3. Optional: submit your own press freedom content for potential distribution to other outlets.

What types of stories will be included?

The content will be explanatory, educational, and reader-friendly, focusing on the importance of press freedom and the role of local journalism. It will not include investigative reports, FOIA disclosures, or other sensitive material.

Are there legal or insurance concerns?

Because the collaborative and campaign is centered on public education rather than investigative publishing, we do not anticipate legal or insurance risks. All materials will be reviewed by NENPA before distribution to ensure they are appropriate and safe to publish.

What happens after the Constitution Day launch?

The Collaborative will continue beyond the Know Your News campaign as a platform to provide ongoing content that newsrooms can use to reinforce the importance of press freedom and local news. Member outlets can suggest their own stories, editorials, and letters to the editor supporting press freedom and the value of local news, to be included in the collaborative and published by other outlets. Downloads will be free during the life of the “Know Your News” campaign. After this, all outlets receive 10 free downloads a month or can sign up for a nominal monthly fee to access our collaborative and others for additional local and regional content.
