Most Recent Hall of Fame Inductees
Concord Monitor
This honor is presented posthumously to George W. Wilson, longtime publisher of the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire and president of Newspapers of New England, Inc. In nearly 40 years with the company Wilson built newspapers known for aiming higher than their small size. As a result, Monitor journalists are regularly sought out by the nation’s most prestigious news organizations. Wilson served on the board of the Associated Press and was named president of both the American Newspaper Publishers Association and the New England Daily Newspaper Association, and he was a member of the board of directors of the Washington Post.
Connecticut Newspapers
After many years at the Hartford Courant Smith went on to become editor of the Meriden, CT Record-Journal, the Connecticut Post and the New Britain Herald. In his 42 years of journalism he served as president of New England Society of Newspaper Editors, president of the Connecticut Associated Press Managing Editors association, and is now president of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information. He is the author of two books and has won numerous awards, including the Yankee Quill and four SPJ First Amendment Awards.
The Hardwick Gazette
Connelly is the long-time co-publisher and editor of The Hardwick Gazette in Vermont. The paper has a reputation for excellence in journalism and community service due to his dedication to the highest ideals of the profession. He has served as president of the Vermont Press Association and the New England Press Association. He was also the founding chairman of the Vermont Coalition for Open Government.
New England Newspaper Association
After 12 years with the Boston Globe Piper oversaw the merger of the New England Daily Publishers Association with the New England Newspaper Advertising Bureau to create the New England Newspaper Association. He served as executive director of NENA for 45 years until its merger to become NENPA in 2009. He is a recipient of the Yankee Quill award, and the NENPA First Amendment Award is named in his honor. He continues today as the executive director of the Newspaper Association Managers organization. Through the years Piper has been friend, counselor and adviser to generations of New England newspaper executives.
Stowe (VT) Reporter
Kearney has been an exceptional leader in New England journalism for more than 40 years, working at both daily and weekly newspapers, teaching journalism and defending and promoting First Amendment and FOI causes. After 36 years at the Keene Sentinel in New Hampshire, Tom is now managing editor of the Stowe (VT) Reporter.
