The full curriculum is designed to provide for students to solve the most challenging aspects of professional journalism and to instill confidence to be on the front lines of understanding the cultural and ethical boundaries and opportunities of becoming members of the esteemed and elite field of professional journalists, in order to safeguard the sanctity of the free press.

Combining traditional practice and innovation, the Department of Journalism is committed to training ethical journalists who can write compelling, original news stories—and bring those stories to life through broadcast, print, web, and multimedia platforms. As a student, you’ll gain rich experience in the field through class assignments, internships, and extracurricular activities that range from conducting on-street interviews and attending State House press conferences to providing multimedia coverage of the Emmys.

You’ll also have access to Emerson’s Journalism Television and Multimedia Facility, a state-of-the-art center for classroom instruction and network-grade news production. A dedicated faculty composed of experienced professionals from news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, CNN, and the Washington Post will guide you—and challenge you—throughout your time at Emerson.

The Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication, named after the former White House Press Secretary, offers hands-on experience in both online and print newspapers, radio, television, social media, and political campaign coverage. From your first day at Franklin Pierce, you’ll start to develop real-world skills, while editing video footage in a personal suite and scouring the campus for breaking news. As part of the nationally recognized political polling center at Franklin Pierce, you’ll have the opportunity to collect data with a professional pollster, write columns for publication in the Boston Herald, and interview live on Boston Herald Radio. You’ll graduate as a trained professional with the skills and talent to embark upon the career you’ve always dreamed about—and the television reel, article publications, and social media following to back it up.
