Publisher – Weekly Newspapers

The Day Publishing Company, eastern Connecticut’s information company, seeks a Publisher for its weekly newspapers and associated web sites west of the Connecticut River. This position is located on the south central Connecticut shoreline.

This Operating Committee position will have overall responsibility for the publication and profitability of Shore Publishing, a network of seven weekly newspapers from Old Saybrook to North Haven, Connecticut. Shore Publishing is a division of The Day Publishing Company and is based in Madison, Connecticut.

The selected candidate will set the overall direction for the publications, including editorial, distribution, marketing and sales; plan, organize, direct and control the resources for producing the publications, including setting budgets and allocating and controlling costs; set and manage short-term and long-term goals and objectives for all newspaper departments and a staff of approximately 50 employees.

This position requires an individual with a working knowledge of the newspaper business, U.S. Postal regulations regarding 2nd class postage, and at least five years of management experience at a daily or weekly newspaper. Strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal communication skills required, as well as the ability to think creatively and strategically. Financial planning skills a must.

ART DIRECTOR

Providence Business News seeks a creative, self-starting designer yearning to become an integral part of a team reinventing Southern Rhode Island’s leading business publication. We have recently re-designed PBN’s print product, and this new look demands not just better visuals, but a more imaginative approach to storytelling, both in words and in images. This is a new position, and its demands are significant, but so are the payoffs.

The art director will design and produce each week’s edition as well as all our special sections that coincide with PBN’s robust recognition and summit panels. This work load requires not just total command of the Adobe Creative Suite in a Mac environment but exceptional organizational and communications skills. The art director will function as part of the editorial team, attending meetings, making photo and graphic assignments, and meeting deadlines. As part of PBN’s design group, the art director also will be called into other projects as needed and be expected to thrive in a team environment.

The New England Newspaper & Press Association (NENPA), which is headquartered in Dedham, Massachusetts, is seeking an experienced manager to assume leadership of the association.

NENPA is the professional trade association for the daily, weekly and specialty newspapers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. NENPA provides services and programming to help more than 400 member publications publish better and more profitable newspapers.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced newspaper or media industry professional who has the skills necessary to work with key media company leaders in the six-state region, conduct large-scale events, foster collaboration between NENPA and its affiliate groups, facilitate the work of volunteer committees, and juggle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Strategic and political savvy to strengthen and advance the organization is extremely important. A collegial leadership style with a demonstrated record of successful management experience is required. High energy, excellent communication skills, strong public speaking skills and an entrepreneurial drive are all necessary. Candidates should possess the ability to think strategically, tactically and creatively within budget limits.

The Executive Director reports directly to the association’s board of directors and is responsible for all day-to-day operations, including financial, staff, equipment, and program supervision. The primary function of the executive director is to promote growth and excellence in New England newspapers through networking, continuing education, professional recognition, and exploring new ideas and technology.
