ASSISTANT EDITOR

The Charlotte News, an award-winning nonprofit community newspaper, is looking for an assistant editor. As an important part of paper's small staff of paid employees and volunteers, this person will wear a number of hats—writer, photographer, designer, even distributor—as they help provide coverage of this fascinating town of farmers, retirees, commuters, artists and summer residents. 

This is an opportunity to help lead an organization attempting to create a model for sustainable, nonprofit community journalism in a town that values the News’s work. We expect candidates to have experience writing and some background in layout and design, though we’ll be willing to train. CONTENT MANAGER

ROLE:   Own the content and communities related to a given subject area, leading and supervising a team of managers and reporters.  Drive coverage for the Courant’s digital, social and print platforms, including but not limited to assigning stories to staff writers, blogging, tracking and posting content from other sites and sources, interacting with users on Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets and assigning, organizing and creating photo galleries and video.  Assigned stories must appeal to both the Courant’s digital and print audiences, tapping into what’s hot, what’s new and what people are talking about.  Stories must sparkle with vitality, be clear and concise and meet the highest standards of accuracy and fairness.  Expectations of position include journalistic excellence, innovation in approach and a comprehensive strategy that will drive audience for the daily newspaper, foster online traffic to given stories and lead to the growth of online communities of interest.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with reporters/MMJs and other content managers to foster the creation of timely, accurate, informative and thought-provoking reports.
  • Manage and produce innovative content for all Courant platforms, with critical focus on growth in the digital and social arenas.  Monitor trends and audience patterns to make sure the Courant’s digital space is the go-to place to get and share information.
  • Coordinate and manage the presentation of stories, information, photos and video for all appropriate digital channels, including daily management of relevant channel on courant.com.  Craft and execute a digital plan for all stories.
  • Meet or exceed daily metrics for page views, photo views, video views, social media shares and other measures.
  • Hand off stories to other managers as required for final editing.
  • Solicit feedback from readers and users, gauging interest in the news of the day.
  • Monitor competing websites, print publications, bloggers and others reporting on the community.
  • Direct reporters to assign and/or shoot photos and video to accompany stories.  Build or work with reporters to build photo galleries and photo essays.
  • Use social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to drive interaction.
  • Play a leadership role in the advancement of the “Digital First” agenda among the Courant and FOX news staffs, including organizing training, education and the development of best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree preferred
  • Three-five years management experience
  • Five years reporting/writing for online or print publication
  • Strong news judgment required; management experience a plus
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter and other social media
  • Knowledge of content management systems
  • Excellent writing, reporting and editing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with others

EDITOR

The New Hampshire Bureau of The Eagle-Tribune located in Derry, New Hampshire is in search of an editor who can do it all to take charge of the New Hampshire edition of the daily paper, as well as the weekly Derry News, and the quarterly Windham Magazine. You must have five or more years of experience as an assignment and content editor. You will also need keen news judgment, excellent line and copy editing skills, be deadline oriented, and the ability to juggle multiple products while driving coverage in the newsroom. You will oversee a staff of six reporters who work for both the Eagle-Tribune and the Derry News, and work in close collaboration with the editors of the city and Haverhill editions of the paper. FULL-TIME REPORTER

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, a 16,000 circulation newspaper serving Hampshire County in western Massachusetts, is seeking a versatile full-time reporter, eager to lead its high school sports coverage online and in print. 

Candidates must be motivated to compete in a competitive market and driven to try new things. Qualified candidates must show a willingness to write beyond the box score, a proficiency in multimedia and social media, and a knowledge of AP style.

Experience at a daily newspaper and knowledge of InCopy and InDesign is a plus. Position includes page designing and copy editing duties.
