After many years at the Hartford Courant Smith went on to become editor of the Meriden, CT Record-Journal, the Connecticut Post and the New Britain Herald. In his 42 years of journalism he served as president of New England Society of Newspaper Editors, president of the Connecticut Associated Press Managing Editors association, and is now president of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information. He is the author of two books and has won numerous awards, including the Yankee Quill and four SPJ First Amendment Awards.
